Overview

A flange pair with gasket and bolting is the standard way to connect carbon steel pipe to valves, pumps, strainers and vessels, and to break a line for maintenance. Weld-neck flanges carry the highest loads and are preferred for pressure and thermal cycling; slip-on flanges are cheaper and easier to align; threaded flanges avoid welding; blind flanges close a line end or a future connection.

Specify flange type, nominal size, pressure class, facing (raised face or flat face), material grade and dimensional standard, plus bore or schedule for weld-neck flanges and thread form for threaded flanges. Order gaskets and bolting to the same class and facing at the same time, since a mismatch at the face is the most common cause of a weeping flanged joint.
