Overview

Butt-weld fittings are bevelled on both ends and welded directly to the pipe, giving a joint as strong as the pipe wall with a smooth internal bore. In carbon steel systems they form every change of direction, branch and size step on chilled-water, condenser-water, steam, fire-main and process lines that are welded rather than grooved or threaded.

Specify the fitting type, nominal size (run and branch for reducing tees, large and small end for reducers), schedule to match the pipe, material grade, elbow radius (long or short) and the dimensional standard, and state whether seamless or welded fittings are acceptable. Fittings should carry the same schedule as the connecting pipe so the weld bevels align; where they differ, a transition detail is needed.
