Most coating failures start with poor preparation, which is why surface preparation materials deserve the same attention as the paint itself. These materials are used in construction projects, industrial maintenance and residential painting, where primers and sealers protect against moisture and corrosion and putty gives smooth, even walls. Choose preparation products for the substrate and the coating that follows. Masonry, gypsum, timber and steel each need a different primer; existing glossy or chalky surfaces need cleaning or abrading before anything will adhere; putty should be sanded and sealed before the first coat. Allow the full drying time the data sheet states between steps, and check compatibility between the primer and the top coat before ordering.
